We are a local chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America. We are located on 50 acres of Linn County property just off 42nd street in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We are a group of approximatly 600 members interested in and supporting:
- Soil, Air, Water and Wildlife Conservation
- Youth Programs
- Shooting Sports
- Just about anyting entertaining in the outdoors
ABOUT OUR CHAPTER
We like to think of your club, The Linn County Chapter, as an entertainment center. Other people might say we are an education center with all of the shooting and hunter education done here. Others might point out the Save Our Streams program, or the various scouting activities we support.
In any case we have about 500 members who have invited guests, we have the scouts, rentals, non-members here for seminars and a wide variety of people visiting here.
If we wish to think of this as a playground, also think of it as a big sandbox. Everyone has to learn to play here together. Unless there is an organized activity (Pistol or Rifle Match, Trap Shoot or Rental) then any member should be able to use whatever part of the sandbox they wish within a reasonable time.
No one is here with a stopwatch, but if for instance someone comes out to use the range, they should not have to wait longer than 20-30 minutes before they can go out up a target and begin to have a good time.
Who Belongs to the Linn County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League?
The answer to that is, a lot of people with widely different interests. We have the Conservationists like Steve Quella and Craig Enneking. We have the Competitive Target Rifle Shooters such as Bill Vesey and Charlie Ong. A large number of people use our Archery Range.
The Retired Group uses the chapter house on Tuesday mornings to socialize, drink coffee and do a clean up or repair project. (There is still room at the top and bottom of that group to join in).
We have not one but two Boy Scout Troops. Troop 766 is the largest troop in the region and members like Frank Coy enjoy helping out with their meetings and projects.
Venture Crew 2000 is an older group that is Co-Ed; Dave Blankenship is helping that large group of late teens find their way. The Rifle Range has the Beem boys, Bill, Ken, Chris and Ben who can be found down at the range sharpening their skills for fun or for the next hunt.
We also have Trap Shooters, Grass Cutters, Project Engineers, Snow Plowers, Painters Electricians, Old Men and young boys and girls enjoying the facilities.
The point is that it takes ALL of us to form and run a club. We don’t have to use all of the facilities to have a good time or to get our moneys worth. We need everyone we have, everyone we can get, friends and neighbors to come out as guests and get acquainted.
We need more people to help a little more and some to do a little less. And we need more of you to join us for dinner on the third Thursday of the month. You can come out and get a good meal and hear an interesting program. So?, What’s so good on TV Anyway??
